Camping Cooking For The Family. Easy And Fun

I will be honest with you right from the start. I enjoy luxury. Why cook over an open fire as the cave men did, well, cave people. It may be a million years ago when they finally figured out how to make fire. Then one evening a few thousand years ago after cooking a meal of leftover muskoxen stew over a hot rock, the lady of the cave discovered one of the rocks had melted and all she had left was a chunk of iron. Before we knew it some smart woman took some of these chunks, piled them into a box shape and there it was. Our first stove. Held the heat for days with only a few little sticks to keep the heat going.

Since then of course we all know what has happened. Mrs. Edison told her husband how to make a light for the oven and Mrs. Tesla explained that her stove would work better if she had electricity and the whole thing came together and now we have electric stoves. So why are we still cooking like the cavewoman did?

When I go camping I want the biggest, most fully equipped RV that a woman can make. Forty feet of bright shiny steel and aluminum with every electric gadget that women can make. Granite countertops instead of boulders to cook on. Bone china dishes, big tables and as much room as four slide outs can give. That is what I call roughing it.

Now I take a nice plump pot roast, place it in the crock pot on the beautiful granite counter top, drop in a little water, turn the knob thingy to high, place the cover on top, set the timer for six hours and that is it. Now I check that the men opened their beer and are looking after the children who are playing a game of some sort before we girls head off for a hard day of shopping at the malls.

After we return I check out the roast, take a look to see that my man cut up a few carrots, potatoes, turnip and in no time our nice supper is ready to be served. I call my husband to set up the table using the linen napkins and the Royal Doulton china of course.

Now, you may be one of those women who find some kind of sick enjoyment out of burning meat on a stick over a smoky campfire but for me, this is the proper way to cook a delicious supper for the whole family with my lily white hands.

Benefits Of Using Coconut Oil For Your Cooking

Coconut butter, which is also commonly referred to as Coconut oil, is a fat that consists of more than 90% saturated fat. As it’s name implies, this oil is obtained from coconuts and is commonly used for cosmetics, baking ingredients and cooking oil. The world’s largest exporter of Coconut oil, which is the Philippines, receives 7% of it’s total export income from this product alone.

Coconut oil is rich in a fatty acid and is among the more stable of all vegetable oils. Many consider it to be a healthy product, which may increase metabolism and improve the body’s ability to fight sickness by strengthening the immune system. Once an immune system becomes weakened for any reason, the body becomes susceptible to an array of illnesses. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, one’s immune system must remain strong. If it ever becomes weakened, it is essential to rebuild the immune system in order to protect the body against harmful sickness and/or disease. On the downside, because coconut oil is also high in saturated fat, some believe that it may increase the likelihood of cardiovascular and/or heart disease and possibly even diabetes. On the other hand, some international populations who consume large quantities of coconut oil have been shown to have lower rates of heart disease.

In addition to concerns surrounding the health effects, both good and bad, Coconut oil has been tested as a fuel, but has been faced with difficult obstacles due to it’s high melting point. Coconut oil is also used for hairstyling in India, while other individuals find it to be useful as a skin moisturizer. Coconut oil is believed to be both effective and safe when used in connection with skin care. And best of all, it is not believed to carry any adverse reactions to the skin. In fact, some users have actually reported improvements in specific skin conditions after using Coconut oil. Among them, eczema, which is a very uncomfortable rash that develops in the form of small blister-like lesions. These are both painful and may result in scarring.

The information in this article is intended for informational purposes only. It should not be considered as, or used in place of, medical advice or professional recommendations for any type of treatment, cure or remedy to certain skin conditions and/or other illnesses. Prior to beginning any treatment regimen, including that which consists of coconut oil, individuals are urged to consult with their physician and/or dermatologist for proper diagnosis and/or treatment recommendation.

Cooking Brown Rice Methods

When you’re cooking brown rice, does it come out mushy or lumpy? When you follow the brown rice instructions, do you get inconsistent results? Despite what everyone on the internet says, there is more than one way to achieve firm but fluffy results when cooking brown rice.

All the brown rice instructions on the internet will say their method is the best. Ultimately, it’s up to your own tastes and desires how you like your grains cooked. A perfect method for one person may be unacceptable to another. Understanding HOW the rice cooks will lead you to the results that fit your tastes.

Brown rice differs from white rice in that it’s less refined. The outer skin or “bran” is left on. It’s like a scuba suit for the rice, making it harder for water to enter. Thus, you must find a way to crack that outer layer, or unzip the scuba suit.

Cooking brown rice will generally take you in one of two directions. Either bring the liquid AND the rice together to a boil, OR boil the water first and THEN add the rice. What’s the difference?

The science of cooking behind rice is “gelatinization of starches”. At 150F (65c), starches will begin to absorb liquids and swell. This is how sauces are thickened, and why the water disappears and the rice gets bigger under cooking.

Different rices have different starch contents. Sushi rice is very sticky. Jasmine rice is very fluffy. Once the bran is cracked on brown rice, the starches gelatinize and make them stick together in lumps.

You can avoid lumpy rice by adding acids or fats in the cooking. Whether you choose to boil your liquid separately from the rice, or together, you can inhibit gelatinization and stick-factor.

If you coat the grains in fat, as in making Risotto, they won’t be as sticky. Try a simple saut

There Are Some Special Microwave Cooking Recipes

Microwave cooking recipes are ideal for people with busy schedules who wouldn’t otherwise have the time to cook. Nevertheless, many experienced cooks are reluctant to try microwave cooking recipes because for some reason they are convinced that they will not taste as good as dishes cooked using an ordinary oven or skillet. The truth is that food that is made in a microwave oven can taste just as delicious as anything you would cook in the conventional way.
Very Convenient
The great thing about microwave cooking recipes is that you can make them in half the time you would ordinarily need. This means that everybody has the time to cook healthy nutritious meals instead of having to fill up on junk food. A microwave meal can be ready in ten minutes instead of two hours so you and your loved ones can eat well even when you have to work late.
Lots of Variety
You can use a microwave to cook all different kinds of food including pasta, rice, poultry, meat, fish, vegetables and potatoes. In fact when you steam vegetables in a microwave they are more nutritionally beneficial because you do not boil away all of the vitamins and minerals.
You can also make all different kinds of ethnic cuisine with a microwave. You can cook Indian, Mexican and Chinese dishes. Microwave ovens are particularly good for Italian cooking, especially for recipes such as mozzarella chicken, stuffed peppers and pot roast. You also have the option of experimenting with microwave cooking recipes that you create yourself.
A Few Tips
If you are trying a microwave cooking recipe the most important thing is to make sure everything is sufficiently cooked so as to avoid ingesting any bacteria. Covering the food with a lid helps to kill any germs. If you are cooking a large piece meat, fish or poultry use a medium power and cook it for a little longer to ensure that the food is not raw in the middle. If possible, cut the meat, fish or poultry into smaller pieces so that the dish will cook evenly in a shorter space of time.
When preparing microwave cooking recipes it is also important to remember that foods continue to cook for a few minutes after you take them out of the microwave. You should therefore let the dishes you cook in your microwave stand for a short while before serving them.
Where to Find Them
Finding microwave cooking recipes is very easy. There are many microwave recipes on the internet and in magazines. You can find them on the back of some food packets too. Furthermore, your friends and relatives probably have some microwave cooking recipes, especially those that have hectic schedules. If you are serious about cooking delicious dishes in your microwave you could also purchase a cookery book on the subject.

How To Make Amazing Dinners Cooking With A Tandoor

Few foods can match the taste of food cooked over a fire. We adore it, but usually depend on more modern methods to cook our meals, like microwaves. At least that is the case in lots of western countries. But it is good to know that some conventional methods still exist, like cooking meals in tandoors.

Tandoors appear to be a big vase, but are actually a kind of oven. They’re shaped like a drum or barrel and made from clay. The warmth is contained inside the container itself, from a charcoal or wooden fire which burns slowly within the bottom. They can attain a lot higher temperatures than conventional ovens and in some instances can get up to over four hundred levels centigrade.

Many people assume that these unique cooking containers descend from India. Nevertheless, they have been first utilized in historical Persia thousands of years ago. Persia is now Iran and they’re still used there. In addition to India and Iran, they are extensively used in Turkey, Armenia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, in addition to in some central Asian countries.

These clay ovens, can be central to the cooking expertise in some international locations and used to cook all their meals. Typically they’re buried within the sand in a communal area and used to feed the neighborhood as a whole. In different countries, they sit beside different appliances in the kitchen, and are solely for home use.

Today there are many completely different sizes and shapes of tandoor, however the central clay heart is a constant. Generally speaking, the warmth continues to be due to a wooden or charcoal fire, however gasoline versions now exist too. Fashionable models are sometimes cased in chrome steel and from the surface appear to be another kitchen appliance found in a restaurant kitchen or personal kitchen.

A few of the standard culinary delights cooked in a tandoor are tandoori chicken and lamb tikka. These are comprised of chunks of boneless chicken breast, or lamb respectively, marinated for a good few hours or better still overnight. The marinade combination is a mix of spices and usually yogurt, which tenderize and add flavor the meat. Other dishes include seekh kebabs, constructed from minced and spiced lamb and fish dishes.

When the chicken or fish is done marinading it’s time to cook it in the tandoor. Often the marinated food might be threaded on to skewers and positioned point facing down into the oven, the point in the coals. Different components are sometimes added to the combo, such as herbs left to gently smoke off the coals, giving the meals an added fragrant boost.

Probably the most well known dish prepared in these clay ovens is tandoori chicken. Obviously this tasty food does take its name from the pots in which they are cooked, however they aren’t only used for cooking meat and fish. For many communities around the globe they’re a significant part of their daily cooking experience, and are used to bake staples like bread. The dough is positioned on the perimeters of the oven and sticks there until it’s baked.Flat breads like roti and naan are a number of the most well-known breads cooked on this way.

A Guide To Slow Cooking Baby Back Ribs On The Grill

Slow cooking baby back ribs on the grill is some thing a great deal of folks attempt but do not get right. Obtaining that fall-off-the-bone tenderness and complete taste is not hard, it just requires a great deal of time and patience. It is an occupation for the complete afternoon, not an evening’s grilling. What’s the secret? Slow and Steady!

Rubs, marinades, sauces are all a component of adding flavour to slow cooking baby back ribs on the grill, but in the event you do not have the slow component correct you wind up with hard, charred bones and not the tender, sweet, tasty ribs you had been expecting!

Prep the Ribs

BBQ ribs are all about the rub, sauce is really a finishing touch of glaze. The flavour comes from what spices you use for the rub. Apply the rub no more than 2-3 hrs prior to cooking. There’s no “one” recipe, regardless of what your neighbor tells you. A single recipe calls for a thin layer of mustard like a base after which add the rub. Other people rub the spices directly on themeat. You are able to use your personal blend or purchase a commercial rub. You have to experiment and choose what tastes greatest for you.

Fire up the Grill

Ideally you would like to slow cook the baby back ribs at about 235 degrees. Aim for 200 to 250 and verify having a calibrated thermometer. You are able to use a smoker, charcoal grill, propane grill, what ever you might have will perform as long as you continue to keep in thoughts you need to cook over indirect lower heat. Wood chips could be added for flavour too.

Let’s get cooking

Lay the rubbed ribs on the grill and close the lid. Based on the weight of the meat, grill temperatures, outdoor temperatures they’ll have to cook for 4 to 7 hrs. Time is really a tool, not an absolute. A great rule of thumb is two hrs to smoke, two hrs in foil to tenderize, an hour out from the foil to firm up the crust and include sauce near the finish on the last hour.

No Peeking

You do not have to continue to keep checking on the slow cooking baby back ribs. They are fine. You are making use of lower heat and as soon as you obtain the best temperatures you need to maintain it that way. Each and every time you lift the lid you let heat out and alter the cooking temperatures. Leave them alone!

Preserving Cooking Oil And Storage

Cooking oil is a staple in most pantries and is used frequently by the chef(s) of a household to prepare any number of culinary variations. The preservation of cooking oil is often overlooked until one goes to pour a spoonful into a pan and it smells, looks (or tastes) funky. Such rancidity often goes unnoticed for some time because most oils bought at a store are highly refined and deodorized; but aside from the taste factor, rancid oils present significant health risks such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Clearly, this should be avoided at all cost by ensuring that cooking oils are stored properly from the time they leave the store.

The cause of rancidity is oxidization, an inevitable process due to the exposure of a fat or oil to air, heat, and light. The more polyunsaturated a fat is, the faster it will go rancid. Examples of oils with a high polyunsaturated fat content are flaxseed oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, and soybean oil. Butter, palm oil, and olive oil have relatively small amounts, but they are by no means safe from early rancidity if not handled with care.

In general, unless cooking oil has been specially preserved, an unopened bottle has a shelf life of about a year if it has been properly stored. Highly polyunsaturated oils don’t keep as well. Although an active chef may go through a large quantity of cooking oil, the average person should avoid buying in bulk. It may be more expensive to continuously buy smaller bottles rather than an annual large one, but it’s better to eat the cost than allow a large quantity to sit, be intermittently exposed to air and heat, and end up eating half a bottle of rancid cooking oil.

Cooking oil’s shelf life should be accounted for while shopping. Like other food items, products tend to be fresher at busier stores with a higher inventory turnover rate: Mind the expiration date, too. Provided that cooking oil is fresh at purchase, those with more preservatives added by the manufacturer last longer than those without them. Also, while darker colored oils tend to be more flavorful than paler colored oils, it’s important to note that ingredients contributing to the flavoring and coloring of the product also lead to faster rancidity. Thus, for maximum shelf life, a consumer should always buy paler colored oils. The bottling of the product is also important, as some bottles are more gas impermeable than others; the most preserve-friendly package for the product would be an opaque, airtight glass or metal container.

Some people don’t like to buy a product simply based on its bottling; if this is you, the solution to meeting your product of choice with smart storage is to transfer the cooking oil into a different bottle when you get home. If the oil comes in a plastic container, particularly clear plastic, then it’s a good idea to transfer it to a gas impermeable glass or metal container that can be sealed airtight. If possible, vacuum seal the storage container so to remove as much lingering oxygen as possible.

The ideal storage scenario for cooking oil is somewhere cool, dark, and without air. Indeed, left at room temperatures, opened bottles of cooking oils can become rancid in anywhere from a week to a couple of months, though it may take several more months before developing an odor. It’s thus important to refrigerate stored oil, especially after it’s been opened, and to keep transparent glass and plastic containers stored in a dark place such as in a box to avoid speeding up the oxygenation process. A lower temperature may cause the cooking oil to become cloudy or solid, but in fact the fat is still perfectly usable and will return to its normal liquid, clear state once left out before use and warmed back to room temperature.

If these tactics go by the wayside over time, then your best bet is to rotate oil more frequently: Throw it out and get another one. Even a bottle of cooking oil that is yet to display symptoms of rancidity isn’t safe if treated without caution, and no amount of preservatives that can be added to oil will substitute for proper storage and rotation.
